They hadn’t seen each other in six years.
She’d always had a crush on him.
He'd only ever seen her like a little sister.
And now...he’s back.
Brooklyn
I thought that he was a part of a distant past. I thought I didn’t feel anything for him now, but I was not so sure anymore. Having him back in my life, for however long it was, was making me see things differently. So many things had changed in the last six years and somehow I’d lost myself and forgotten all about my dreams.
My home life was still a mess, my personal life was nothing to boast about and when I see how successful he is, how everything he’d always wanted came true, I couldn't help but feel lacking in a lot of ways. But he’s back and he needed me. I knew I was the only one who understood that part of his life, the only one he’s willing to share it with. My heart is still beating too hard and too fast for him and this time around, I was as much an adult as he was.
Having a six year age gap didn't mean shit.
Nolan
Being back in Riverdale was harder than I thought. I’d turned my back on that life, but there had always been that one girl in my head. Little B. Now she’s nothing like the twelve year old girl I’d last seen. She’s a young woman, gorgeous and sexy. I couldn't stay away. There’s something drawing me to her and it goes beyond my need to reconnect with her, to have her back in my life and fill the hollow part of my chest. But I couldn't forget the little girl she had been; I shouldn’t forget the little girl she used to be.
Growing up with a junkie mother and nobody else, my neighbor, Brooklyn, had been my only happy place. I had taken care of her, and when I had left, I had to leave behind a huge part of me. I couldn't do it again. I needed her. Once again, she’s the only person I want in my life, but I wasn’t sure if it was for all the right reasons.
Were there too many obstacles in the way?

Six Years edition by Stephanie Witter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
3.5 Stars
Brooklyn and Nolan have been friends since they were children, they are six years apart and Nolan has always thought of Brooklyn as his kid sister and best friend. When he left her to go off to college and never look back he didn't realize how much that broke Brooklyn. Six years later, Nolan is back in town to see his mother and Brooklyn has grown up.
So much has changed with these two in the six years that they have been apart. Brooklyn thought her feelings for Nolan would have dissipated but one look at him, and she knows he's still the one she loves. Nolan has a hard time reconciling in his head that the 12 year old girl he left behind is now a woman, who is very much attracted to, and doesn't know what to do.
Brooklyn and Nolan go back and forth a lot during this book with pulling each other in and pushing each other away. Brooklyn's heart is invested but getting Nolan on the same page seems to be a difficult thing to do. Everyone in town knows how much Brooklyn cares about Nolan, but he doesn't seem to get how badly he hurt her when he left.
I did like seeing flashbacks of these two when they were younger and seeing how their friendship grew. My heart broke for Brooklyn each and every time that Nolan hurt her, but at the same time I was rooting for these two to finally figure it out and get together. It was horrible seeing how bad Nolan and Brooklyn's families were to them, and I'm glad that both of them made some sort of peace with their family during this book.
This is a quick read, that definitely had a ton of potential, but I felt as if the ending was too rushed in this case. I loved the back and forth, the story of these two figuring things out as adults, and all the things they dealt with, but I wanted to see more of how things went for them once things settled down.
I did enjoy this story, and will be picking up more books by Stephanie Witter, and if you're looking for a unique friends to lovers book, definitely pick up Six Years today.
Two stars because (1) it was $3, and, (2) I actually finished it, although it was quiet an effort.
First off, the editing is beyond horrible. Even ignoring the pervasive issues with grammar and tense (which are maddening), there are statements in there that a first grader wouldn’t make – “You’re not responsible of me”…what? There are head scratchers like this throughout that just make it tough to stay dialed in.
My next gripe is probably going to sound picky, so I’m going to try to quantify it for folks that haven’t read this one – Nolan’s LIP RING. I’m not opposed to lip rings in any way, but the author is apparently the world’s biggest fan because it’s literally a character. I finally got annoyed and did a keyword search, “lip ring” appears 64 times and “loop” (e.g., “pulled at the loop in his lip”) appears 11. For a 315 page book, that’s a shout-out every 4 pages or so. I’d been reading about 30 minutes when I started hoping the thing would get ripped out so we could stop hearing about it.
Finally, both the dialogue between the characters as well as their internal thought processes while they’re taking turns narrating is just so unbelievable. “We were writing a whole new chapter in the story of our relationship and I think it’s my favorite.” Usually when I find myself actually rolling my eyes while reading a book it’s a sure sign I need to delete it and move on. I honestly sort of wish I had because of how happy I was to see it end.
